OUR
HISTORY
Seeds of the church began around 1909 in a home near Poulsbo’s First Lutheran Church. The congregation later moved to downtown Poulsbo into the original Blue Sky Printing building, across from the Sons of Norway Hall. The church was then known as
Poulsbo Full Gospel Tabernacle.
Because of continued growth, a new church was built on Harrison Street and dedicated in 1966. It was then that the name was changed to
Christ Memorial Church.
In January 1978, the congregation began holding services in the former Poulsbo Elementary School building (what is today Christ the King Academy), and ground was broken in June 1978 for the new church building. The present main church building was completed in 13 months, and the first service was held in July 1979.
In 1974, King’s West school began at Island Lake as an extension of King’s Garden Schools in north Seattle. One year later King’s Garden closed the school and it was taken over by CMC. A part of the former Poulsbo Elementary was leased from the North Kitsap School District, remodeled, and used for the new Christian school, renamed "Christ the King Academy," a ministry of CMC.
In 1976, the school building and its nearly ten-acre site were made available for sale through an open bid process, with the minimum acceptable bid set at $219,500. CMC, the only bidder, purchased the school building and ten acres for $220,000.
In 1956,
Al and Erika Munger
came as pastors and led the congregation for nearly 32 years. Throughout the years, the congregation experienced consistent growth. The Mungers retired in January 1988.
After a pastoral search process was conducted, having received resumes and applications from many candidates,
Marc Pearson
was selected by a vote of the church membership as the next Senior Pastor, assuming office in January 1988. From 1978 to 1988, Marc served at CMC as a staff pastor. Prior to this, he served churches in Seattle and Denver.
CMC broke ground again in 1997 to begin
Phase One
of the
Master Plan for Ministry Expansion
. This phase included extensive site work, the addition of 144 parking spaces, the West Wing building, the new multimedia system with two large sanctuary screens, and air conditioning in the sanctuary and Munger Chapel.
Phase Two
was completed in January 2002, including the Fellowship Hall, church office complex, the new church nursery, a storage building, lighting and pipe organ renovations (some yet to be completed), and beautiful landscaping.
